Roy Lee Melcher - Radio Operator
Roy
Lee Melcher, one of the three licensed operators for the 5,000 watt transmitter
of WDBJ in Colonial Heights, received his preparation for the job he now fills
with the local studio through a correspondence course from the RCA School
of Radio. His interest in electrical work began with a job as refrigeration
engineer with H. C. Baker Company, after he had worked for a while as apprentice
pressman with a local printing company.
The 16-month course with RCA fitted M. Melcher for his license and his job with WDBJ which has held since October, 1934. A native of Bluefield, WV, he attended the public schools in that city and Roanoke, graduating from Jefferson Senior High School here.
